Chess for Change Academy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering through chess, making high-quality chess education accessible to all students, regardless of their background or financial resources. Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, the academy was founded in response to the growing need for structured and intellectually engaging learning opportunities, particularly for underserved communities impacted by educational disruption and social isolation. Since its inception, Chess for Change has taught over 1,100 students, delivered more than 1,550 instructional lessons, and built a team of 15 dedicated mentors, including Suvir Aylawadi, who provide structured coaching and guidance to support learners. Additionally, our outreach initiatives and open-access programming have expanded educational access to over 10,200 individuals through workshops, community sessions, and digital resources.
Our mission is to use chess as a vehicle for cognitive development, leadership growth, and social empowerment. By offering free instruction, mentorship, scholarships, and international workshops, we strive to close the opportunity gap in chess education and expand access to enrichment programs that are often limited by geography or income. Chess for Change Academy has reached students across borders, with a special focus on supporting economically disadvantaged children in India and other underserved regions. Through our strategic chess learning programs, we align with SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 10, and SDG 17. Our students develop discipline, long-term planning ability, analytical reasoning, and confidence. Chess becomes a platform for mentorship, global connection, and personal growth, translating measurable participation into meaningful, long-term impact.
Chess for Change Academy, led by Suvir Aylawadi, has delivered more than 1,000 structured lessons to over 1,000 students across 12 countries, empowering through chess and expanding access to high-quality chess education worldwide. Internal program feedback highlights that over 80% of participating students report measurable improvements in focus, analytical thinking, and academic confidence within their first year of strategic chess learning. Our students have achieved tournament placements, advanced rating levels, and have taken on leadership roles in their school chess communities.
Every student receives an individualized development pathway built on skill assessments, goal setting, and structured progress tracking to empower through chess. Our programs, led by Suvir Aylawadi, serve beginners through advanced competitors, with over 70% of returning students advancing at least one competitive level within twelve months. By focusing on strategic chess learning, small group mentorship, and adaptive lesson planning, we ensure that instruction remains aligned with each student’s pace and long-term goals.
Our instructional team, including renowned players like Suvir Aylawadi and experienced scholastic coaches, brings over 20 years of combined competitive and teaching expertise to the table. These coaches empower students through chess, providing direct mentorship, game analysis, and structured performance feedback aimed at enhancing both technical skills and competitive resilience. Through our chess for change initiative, students experience consistent guidance and measurable growth benchmarks that foster discipline, strategic thinking, and confidence both on and off the board, all rooted in strategic chess learning.
